I will explain when your Laptop needs upgrade.
1. When your Laptop is nearly 3 or more years old. Why? Because every electronic device has its lifetime and for electronic its max three years recommend.
2. When Operating system upgrades or new releases are out, its recommend to check upgrade hardware requirements. If these are compatible then it's ok or you have to upgrade some devices.
3. Working software is also a cause where you have to consider hardware upgrades because their requirements are pretty much higher than the company default configuration.

What should have to upgrade in hardware?
This much easier to find because anything is causing that condition is always has a minimum or maximum boundaries.
1. If you need processing fast its usually for gaming and digital works you need to upgrade the processor or mostly done by ram upgrade.
2. If you need storage then its for harddisk upgrade for more space in storage.
